What’s Happened to Average or Normal?

December is here (duh) and, per normal, this finds me running around in my spare time (HA) like a chicken with her head cut off trying to figure out what to buy whom for Christmas.

For whatever reason, I seem to be stuck in the kitchen this year. Maybe it’s my new found way of eating more fruits and vegs and trying not to have any sugar, but my eye, stomach and ahem! booty are drawn to the kitchen areas of stores. For whatever reason, when I go shopping for others, it seems that I always end up looking for things I need not so much the person I’m buying a gift for.

This year, trolling through housewares has me a bit dismayed–when did someone decide we all needed appliances that make really really small things?  I have no idea how I have made it this far along in life without my own personal miniature brownie maker, miniature donut maker, miniature cupcake maker, miniature pie maker and last, but certainly not least, miniature whoopie pie maker. I don’t want ANY of these (well, the whoopie pie maker does sound like it could be useful for every household in America), do I? And if I did, where exactly am I supposed to store all of these extra electronic gadgets. Especially since……

It seems that all regular appliances are now all gargantuan. I could use a new food processor. I’m grateful to my current food processor, but, no offense,  after 21 years of being together, it’s time for a divorce. The fact that it spews, and I’m NOT using that word lightly, all contents everywhere making for complicated cleanups has me begging for mercy. Same goes for my blender–that beootch so needs to leave. I’m worried, though, about their replacements. Have you seen the size of a food processor built in this decade? They are all huge. Well not all, there is, of course, the miniature food processor useful for ___________ you fill in the blank because I can’t.

I just want regular ‘ole, medium, average appliances that do what they’re supposed to do (yes, I really do need to make that a requirement). I like brands like Kitchen Aid and Cuisinart –they just sound like quality, don’t they? I want ones that won’t require me to move or  build out in order to store them when not in use. If you know of one/any regular sized appliances–and I’m specifically talking about blenders and food processors, put a bow on it (red will do) and drop it off on my front porch. You’ll make my Christmas Merry and Bright and maybe, just maybe, if I get that whoopie pie machine, I’ll whip up a miniature batch just for you.

AAAARGH December 25th again???

Christmas is on December 25th again this year. How did that happen? It can’t be less than a month away, can it?

Prior to having kids, I was one of those people who had their Christmas shopping done before October – bought, wrapped and ready to go. It was wonderful–no stress, no crowds, no worries. Something happened with the addition of kids. Now it seems like every year, it’s a rush up until the very last minute. I’m sure, once again this year, I’ll be the one up on Christmas Eve night until waaaay past my bedtime wrapping gifts.

I must admit, part of me likes the thrill of the great deal it seems you can get this time of year. It’s been, how shall I put it….., an experience standing in line at Walmart (where I normally don’t set foot) on Black Friday to get the deal of the proverbial century.

My biggest challenge is that I’m not prepared. Christmas is the same day every blessed year in and year out and yet I put aside a piddly $225 throughout this entire year. I’m purchasing gifts for about 30 people, so unless they’re all into trash and trinkets (and that really is only my 7 year old son), I’m in trouble on the money front. As I don’t have credit cards, this could be an interesting holiday season for all of us.

There’s not much more I can do but to do what I can and to use this as a teaching opportunity for my kids on the importance of remembering the real reason for Christmas isn’t about the gifts we get but the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Maybe, just maybe, I’ll start saving in January of 2012 for December 25, 2012. I doubt I’ll actually do it (what is it about human nature that we’re so gluten for punishment?), but a girl has to have her dreams.

So fess up – are you prepared? Gifts bought and wrapped? Are you out there mocking all of us last minute shoppers?

Disney on Ice Recap

No show is complete without a recap on what you loved best.  Well, Friday night, me and the family headed downtown to see Disney on Ice, Micky & Minnie’s Magical Adventure. This was our first ever Disney on Ice visit and we had skate side seats.

We all had a great time – even my six year old son. He was a little skeptical about going, but after we got the boy some cotton candy, he was as happy as lark and even pointed out the characters he really liked.  The show was divided into segments: The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Lilo & Stitch and Peter Pan. His favorite sections were from The Lion King and The Little Mermaid – he loved the costumes of the animals.

My nine year old daughter just delighted in everything. She just took it all in with a huge grin on her face. She insisted on bringing her camera, and as I forgot mine, she’s my official blog photographer this go around. If she wasn’t taking photos (she took over 50!), she was clapping her hands with glee and pointing out all of the wonderful things taking place.

For me, my favorite was when Tinkerbell burst onto the stage and sprinkled pixie dust everywhere. So. super.cool.

The costumes were amazing and gorgeous and the overall production was clean and well rehearsed. Everyone in the audience seemed to really enjoy the show. I know we did.

Thanks, Feld for tickets to a great show!

Disclosure: I am a Feld Family Ambassador, and in exchange for my time and efforts in attending shows and reporting my opinion within this blog, as well as keeping you advised of the latest discount offers, Feld Entertainment has provided me with complimentary tickets to Feld shows and opportunities to attend private Feld pre-Show events.
